Reel

A Reel is a short-form vertical video format on Instagram (and Facebook) that is distributed primarily through the Explore tab and Reels feed, offering greater organic reach potential than static posts.

Why Reels Have Greater Reach

Reels are Instagram's answer to TikTok — and the platform has explicitly stated it gives Reels preferential algorithmic distribution to compete. Unlike feed posts (which mostly reach your existing followers), Reels are actively surfaced to non-followers who haven't heard of your brand. This makes Reels the best organic reach driver on Instagram.

Reel Length and Performance

Instagram allows Reels up to 90 seconds. However, performance data consistently shows:

- Under 30 seconds performs best for pure reach

- 30–60 seconds works well for educational content

- 60–90 seconds is best for complex narratives where retention holds up

The key metric is view completion rate — what percentage of viewers watch to the end? High completion signals quality to the algorithm.

What Works as a Reel

  • Quick tips or tutorials in under 30 seconds
  • Behind-the-scenes moments with narration or text overlays
  • Transformations and before/after
  • Trending audio applied to relevant brand content
  • Product demonstrations
  • "Day in the life" content for personal brands

Reels vs. TikTok Videos

Reels and TikTok videos serve the same function on different platforms. A single short video can often be repurposed across both with minor edits (removing platform watermarks, adjusting captions). Cross-posting is a common and effective strategy.
